Bears and How to survive a potential attack

What to do if you find yourself a little too close to a bear!

How to survive a bear attack

If you find yourself facing a bear attack, it's important to stay calm and use your best judgment to determine the best course of action. Here are some tips for surviving a bear attack:

  • Identify the type of bear: Different bear species have different behaviours, and your response should be tailored accordingly. For example, grizzly bears are more aggressive and predatory, while black bears are more timid and often avoid confrontations.
  • Don't run: If you run, the bear may perceive you as prey and chase after you. Instead, try to remain standing and make yourself look as large as possible by holding your arms above your head or holding a jacket or backpack above your head.
  • Make noise: Bears are often frightened by loud noises, so try shouting, clapping, or using a bear horn or whistle to deter the bear.
  • Use bear spray: If you have bear spray, use it according to the instructions on the label. Bear spray is a non-lethal deterrent that can be effective in deterring bears.
  • Fight back: If the bear attacks, do everything you can to fight back and protect yourself. Use your hands, feet, and any weapons you have at your disposal to try to deter the bear.

It's important to remember that bear attacks are rare, and most bears will avoid confrontations with humans if given the opportunity. By following these tips and being prepared, you can increase your chances of surviving a bear attack.
