Ever Been Stuck In an Elevator?

Scary right? Sometimes it's good to know What to do if this fictitious event happens to you

How to survive being stuck in an elevator

You decided to take the lift instead of the stairs. Well karma came back and took a chunk out of your behind. You are now stuck in your metal tomb... ok let's not get too serious here.

Being stuck in a lift can be a terrifying experience. Imagine being trapped in a small, enclosed space with no way out. The darkness and silence can be overwhelming, and the feeling of claustrophobia can be suffocating. But, it's important to remember that help should be on it's way.

In the event that you find yourself locked in a lift for 24 hours, there are a few things you can do to survive:

  • Remain calm: Panic can lead to a quick depletion of oxygen and energy. Try to stay calm and think logically about your situation.
  • Use your phone: If you have a phone, try to call for help. If there is no signal, you can still use it to call emergency services by using the emergency call feature.
  • Conserve energy: Try to conserve energy by sitting or lying down, rather than standing or pacing.
  • Stay hydrated: If there is water available, try to drink as much as you can to stay hydrated.
  • Use the emergency alarm: If there is an emergency alarm in the lift, use it to signal for help.
  • Try to open the doors: If you can safely open the doors, try to do so.
  • If there is ventilation, try to signal for help: If you can find a way to signal for help, do it.
  • It is also important to remember that if the lift has a CCTV, rescuers will be able to locate you, and if there is a phone inside the lift, you can call for help.
  • While you wait try out boredom busters or use your phone to pass the time. It may relive you of some anxiety's.

What not to do

A quick little list of all the things you should not do when being stuck in a lift!

  • Do not panic or over exert yourself: Panic can lead to a quick depletion of oxygen and energy, and over exertion can lead to dehydration and fatigue. Try to stay calm and think logically about your situation.
  • Do not try to pry open the doors or force them open: This can be dangerous and may cause further damage to the lift, making it harder for rescuers to reach you. If the door can easily be opened then you can try this.
  • Do not use emergency alarm excessively: Only use the emergency alarm if you have an emergency, if you use it excessively you may be causing unnecessary stress to emergency services and it may be ignored.
  • Do not eat or drink anything that isn't safe: If you have limited resources, you should avoid eating or drinking anything that may be unsafe, as it can make you ill.
  • Do not waste phone battery: If you have a phone, try to conserve its battery as much as possible so that you can use it to call for help.
  • Do not try to break the lift's equipment: You could cause more damage and make it harder for the rescuers to get you out.
  • Do not try to climb out of the lift: This is dangerous and can lead to injury. Wait for the rescuers to come and help you.
  • It is important to remember that help is on the way, and it is important to stay calm and conserve energy while waiting for rescue.

We do hope this quick guide helps you just in case you find yourself stuck inside a lift! This is why always tell people to make sure they carry a small snack and a drink just in case!
